Nobody needs a scale, measuring cups or other tools that get in the way when you are trying to get a handle on food portion control. Besides, who wants to drag measuring cups out of the cupboard, and how do you take them with you to a restaurant? Frankly, using these things just makes the whole process of food portion control a bit of a nuisance, which contributes to why people tend to avoid doing it.
The good news is that you have exactly what you need to get a handle on what you eat. Your hands are the only tool you need for good food portion control, which is a key element in maintaining your proper weight. Of course, you should also consume as many vegetables as you can. (You’ll also notice it is the most generous measurement out of possible food portions.)
It turns out that whether you are a man or woman, big or small, your own hand is the perfect measuring device for you. Use your hands to measure your meals and you are on the fast and easy track to good food portion control that is just right for you.
This isn’t the latest “pop science” so you can trust it. Simin Levinson, lecturer at Arizona State University’s School of Nutrition and Health Promotion, gave a presentation on this subject and we created an infographic based on that information.
We agree with Ms Levinson, who said “People hear a lot about what they should eat, but not how much they should eat. Many have no idea what a healthy portion of chicken, rice, fruits and other foods are, and that is one of the reasons we are eating way too much.”
We hope you find this information on food portion control useful. You can also help decrease the amount of food you eat (or increase it) by using plate size and color. Read our article about Do Red Plates for Dementia Really Help People Eat More?
